For 26-year-old Umar Sofi, the dream of studying at Columbia University’s School of Journalism seemed within reach. After years of hard work and a partial scholarship, Sofi quit his job in anticipation of moving to the US.

However, on May 27, just as Sofi was preparing for his new chapter, the US government abruptly paused student visa appointments.

The news hit him like a ton of bricks, and he was left feeling numb, unable to process the sudden shift in his academic future.

Reflecting on the shock and disappointment that followed the announcement. His situation is far from unique.

In Mumbai, 17-year-old Samita Garg (name changed for privacy) had just been accepted into a top US university to study biochemistry.

However, just a day after receiving her acceptance letter, she too found herself caught in the chaos of the visa suspension.

It’s scary and stressful, Ms. Garg said. “It feels like I’ve been left in the lurch, not knowing when this will end.

Both Sofi and Garg now face the challenge of securing their student visas in the next few weeks, with little clarity about when the process will be resumed, casting a shadow over their educational journeys.

The pause in student visa appointments by the US has far-reaching consequences, especially for Indian students, who make up a significant portion of the international student population in the US.

According to Open Doors, an organization that tracks data on foreign students, over 330,000 Indian students were enrolled in US universities for the 2023-2024 academic year, comprising nearly a third of the total international student body.

Despite India’s long-standing relationship with the US in higher education, the suspension of student visas has led to a decline in applications for the upcoming autumn semester.

Educational consultants report that applications from India have dropped by at least 30%, with students expressing deep concerns about the uncertainty surrounding their future.

“The biggest fear is safety—what if their visas are rejected or they are deported mid-term?” said Naveen Chopra, founder of TC Global, an international education consultancy.

The constant uncertainty at every step—first the visa, then restrictions on internships and part-time work, and the constant surveillance on campus—it’s just too much,” Mr. Unni shared.

It’s stressful and not something I’m willing to take on.

This shift in mindset is becoming more common, as many students are now exploring other international education hubs that offer more stability and clearer paths to academic and professional success.

Countries like the UK and Australia have been increasingly attractive alternatives, as they have not imposed similar levels of uncertainty on students.

Foreign students contribute billions to the US economy and provide essential support for many universities, particularly regional and state institutions.

In the 2023-24 academic year, foreign students contributed $43.8 billion to the US economy, according to Nafsa, an association of international educators. These students also supported over 375,000 jobs across the country.

However, this reliance on international students is increasingly being jeopardized by the current political climate.

Prof. Glass from Boston College points out that these changes are not just about short-term disruptions in tuition revenue but about the long-term rupture of a strategic relationship that has benefited both countries.

For decades, India has seen its brightest students seek higher education in the US due to the lack of quality and quantity in the Indian higher education system.

While India has made strides in improving its educational infrastructure, it remains far behind in providing a comprehensive research ecosystem and opportunities for advanced studies in certain fields.

As a result, many Indian students have been forced to seek education abroad, particularly in the US, where they can access world-class research facilities and a supportive academic environment.
